“Immigration is beautiful. It truly is, but it comes at a cost. People are seeking asylum and fleeing areas that are inhabitable due to climate change and safety. Some just want a better life for themselves and their children. Currently, trans womxn of color are dying in I.C.E. detention centers because they are misgendered and not receiving adequate healthcare. Children and parents are dying at the U.S. border and in I.C.E. facilities. Families are being separated at the border, and children are living in centers with no bedding, toothbrushes, soap, and other basic necessities. So when you say, “Come here legally”, “Go back to your country”, “Speak English”, “Immigrants are stealing our jobs”, I say to you;

1. Seeking asylum is not illegal.
2. You are on stolen land.
3. The U.S. has no official language.
4. They are doing the jobs you won’t do.

Immigration is queer, black and brown, differently-abled, it is a multitude of cultures and languages, but above all, it is beautiful. I write this in memory of Roxsana Hernandez, Johana “Joa” Medina, Zeresenay Ermias Testfatsion, Huy Chi Tran, Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez, Valeria, and so many more that have passed in I.C.E. custody. Rest in power.”
